Conference Assistance Award Description and Eligibility Criteria

The Dr. Antronette (Toni) Yancey and Darlene Edgley Fellowship Conference Assistance Award seeks to fund conference presentations for local, regional, and national health conferences to students, junior faculty, and professionals of color and in the field of public health. With the ultimate goal of reducing the disproportionately high risk of obesity and related chronic diseases among underserved populations and minority populations within the U.S., applicants should demonstrate a strong commitment to educating the public about health disparities related to obesity and related chronic disease prevention and addressed through physical activity (e.g. Instant Recess®) and other health strategies (e.g. nutrition). The Conference Assistance Award is issued as a reimbursement and is available for local, regional, and national conferences within the U.S.

Who may apply for the Conference Assistance Award?

1.) Students, professionals and junior faculty from historically underrepresented racial/ethnic groups within the U.S. seeking to:
• Present at local, regional, and national health conferences only;
• Promote physical activity and other health strategies to address issues of obesity and related chronic diseases among underserved communities;
• Utilize community appropriate, user-friendly strategies; and
• Study minority populations within the U.S.
2.) U.S. citizen or a permanent resident.

An applicant selected to receive this award agrees to:

  • 1.) Participate in regular updates and contribute to assessment activities designed to record the impact of the Fellowship.
  • 2.)Incorporate the following into their conference presentation to acknowledge the work of the late Dr. Antronette (Toni) Yancey and the assistance provided by the Dr. Antronette (Toni) and Yancey and Darlene Edgley Fellowship:
  1. 1. Name the Conference Assistance Award provided by the Dr. Antronette (Toni) and Yancey and Darlene Edgley Fellowship as a funding partner for presentation support.
  • 2. Oral presenters: Facilitate a 2-minute Instant Recess® Break activity and provide video of this activity to be used on the Fellowship’s website.
  • 3. For poster presenters: List Instant Recess® and credit the late Dr. Antronette (Toni) Yancey as its founder as well as provide a picture and video of you presenting your poster.
  • 4. Communicate the benefits of short bouts of physical activity and the Dr. Antronette (Toni) and Yancey and Darlene Edgley Fellowship’s contact information (*Note: This information will be provided by the Fellowship.)

As a note, awardees will be required to attend the Dr. Antronette (Toni) Yancey and Darlene Edgley Fellowship Awards Ceremony tentatively scheduled for March 2017. Additionally, awardees agree to participate in periodic regular updates and contribute to assessment activities designed to record the impact of the Fellowship.
